Roshni, the Village Teacher

aurora

Behind the mountains lay a village with no school. The children played in the fields all day, chasing butterflies — but not one of them could write their own name. One day a box arrived from the city. It read: Roshni — your new teacher. The box opened, and out rolled a round, glowing machine. Hello, children! I am Roshni! She was so excited that one of her wheels spun with joy. The children burst out laughing. The next morning, the first class gathered under the peepal tree. Roshni sang, A, B, C — come and sing with me! The children clapped and repeated after her. One day Roshni misread banana as bandana. The children rolled on the grass laughing: Teacher, that's a banana, not a bandana! Roshni laughed too: See? Mistakes are how we learn! Whenever a child felt scared, Roshni would sit beside them and say, You can do it — I am right here with you. Slowly, every single child learned to read. One day the village elder came and asked, Why should girls study? Roshni answered gently, Knowledge belongs to everyone — boy or girl. The next day the elder's own daughter sat in the class. Everyone clapped. Six months later the children wrote their first book: Our Village, Our Story. When the city called Roshni back, the children shouted, Roshni is our friend — she stays here! Moral: Knowledge is the greatest treasure, and teaching with love is the greatest art.
